Piloting the SunburST Makers' InnoFest 2016

SST and the Makers' Lab were privileged to organise the pilot run of the SunburST Makers' InnoFest programme, which is kindly supported by the Singapore Technologies Endowment Programme (STEP). The objectives of the programme is to nurture students into future makers, and develop deep students' interests in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).

Over 30 students from the Seconday 1 and 2 classes (2016) gamely volunteered to sign up for the programme over 2 full days on the 1st and 2nd June 2016, during their school holidays. Students were exposed to and had hands-on sessions with sheet materials and electronics, and in the end, make a USB-powered desktop lamp as their final reward.

More pictures captured during the entire 2 days could be viewed in the official SST's Facebook page, and the Makers' Lab@SST page. Some of them are shown below:

Our first school event

During SST's Open House 2016 on the 28th May 2016, the Makers' Lab was up and running to being part of the slew of events being organised. Two sessions of our making workshop were planned and conducted. We received overwhelming support from visitors, and easily hit our target of having 15 pairs of parent and child for each of the session, and maybe more! Sadly we have to reject a number of visitors who came in a little later, as places were really limited.

Nonetheless the general feedback that we received were fantastic, with many finding the sessions enjoyable. Each pair also enjoyed bringing back the completed clock that they made. Below are some photos from the sessions.

Works-in-progress (part 2)

Following up from the construction works at the earlier stages, here are some photos of the lab taking shape a few weeks after. You can see some of the forms, look and feel of the lab being realized.

arranged at the light-duty side of the lab.

Finally the tables for the light-duty area are being installed.
Note the absence of dangling wires!

Overhead elements are being added to create additional
work and storage space above each table.

cater to the size of the students.

The segregation is intentional, in order to ensure the creation of 2 separate type of
working spaces, as well as to ensure safety.

Works-in-progress

Here are some pictures of the construction phase of the Makers' Lab. As we move along towards the final completion of the lab, let us not forget that the space is just one aspect of the lab. More work still needs to be done in order to get the Maker Programme going!

room later on, with no wire visible wire trunkings.
Adding in the floorings. A hardy one was chosen to both aesthetically
complement the look and feel of the lab, as well as to provide functional protection.

Introduction to 3D printing for staff

To promote a MAKER culture in SST, 2 runs of an 'Introduction to 3D printing' training was conducted at the Art, Design, Media and Technology (ADMT) Studio. A total of 14 staff attended the training. Here are glimpses of both sessions:
